2007 USA FOUR CORNERS TOUR STATISTICS
A large part of motorcycle touring is the
freedom of the open road; going where you want, when you want. The last
thing you want to think of on a long ride is keeping track of finances and
resources - that's what work is for. However, data like this
can help you plan future trips. If you are really lucky, you
can find someone with a similar bike who keeps track of this data on
their rides, and then posts it on the Internet so you don't have to do
it on your rides!
Here are the statistics for the 2007 USA Four
Corners Tour. These numbers might be useful to those of you
considering or planning to try the SCMA's USA Four Corners Tour.
Obviously some of these statistics are based on route and time-specific factors such as fuel
costs, motorcycle type, riding style, weather, etc; so keep that in mind if
you intend to use any of this information in planning your own tour. |

TIME |
|
Tour Dates: May 6th through June 4th,
2007 |
Note that this time includes 3 non-riding days, for a total of 27 riding
days. |
|
SCMA Time/ Mileage: 18 days/ 8,004 Miles |
This is the time and mileage from San Ysidro, CA to Blaine, WA, Madawaska,
ME, and Key West, FL. SCMA requires that these check points be reached
within 21 days to be declared a Finisher. Barring any major
catastrophes, 21 days is more than enough time, even for slow riders. |
|
Total Tour Mileage: 12,467 Miles
|
Distance from my front door, to all the corners and home again.
|
|
Total Riding Time: 200:49 (Hours:Minutes) |
The
actual time I spent on my motorcycle riding (from GPS log) |
|
Total Tour Time: 660 Hours |
The
total time (including stopped time) of the tour. |
|
Average Moving Speed: 62 Miles/ Hour |
The
overall average tour speed, calculated from the above info. |
|
MACHINE |
|
Motorcycle: 2004 BMW R1150GS Adventure |
Why
settle for anything less? |
Tires: Metzeler Tourance
|
|
|
| Rear tire after 10,067
miles of highway riding |
Front Tire after 12,467
miles of highway riding |
|
Single front tire made the whole trip with a lot of tread left (probably can
go another 8,000 miles). One rear tire had to be replaced at about
2,400 miles due to a large puncture, the replacement rear tire (also a
Tourance) made it the remaining 10,067 miles. I'm guessing another
1,000 miles could probably be 'safely' squeezed out of the rear tire.
One rear tire could have potentially made the whole trip (12,467 miles), but
it would have looked like a racing slick at the end. |
|
FUEL |
|
Amount of Fuel: 329 Gallons |
The
total volume of fuel required for this tour. |
|
Fuel Unit Cost: $3.14 to $4.82 ($US/
Gallon) |
These prices were for premium fuel and account
for the US-Canadian exchange rate (approximately 5% at the time of the
tour). $4.82/ gallon was a rude awakening to what gas prices can be
(on the low end) outside of the USA. |
| |
$3.78
US/ Gallon Average |
|
Total Fuel Cost: $1,234 (US) |
The
actual amount of money spent on fuel during the tour. |
|
Average Fuel Economy: 39.1 Miles/ Gallon
|
Fuel economy ranged from 31.8 to 50.3 miles per gallon (see graph) depending
on weather, speed, terrain, weight, etc. |
