miles later. The road was hard-packed through
this stretch with the exception of loose gravel and sand in the
washes.
 |
Eventually I saw the headlights from traffic on
I-15, although my GPS showed I was still 20 miles away. I
didn't believe it until 20 miles later. |
|
Barely evident in this
picture, I finally saw car headlights on I-15 |
I stopped just short of I-15 to call
my friend whom I was supposed to have met in Las Vegas two hours
previous. The Milky Way was out in full vibrancy. I
enjoyed my last few minutes in the peacefulness of the desert before
I hit the traffic of I-15 and Las Vegas.
Overall, the Carp/ Elgin Road was a fun ride.
Missing a turn and riding the flood-torn sections of the road made
this ride even more fun. It is not a road you would want to
ride everyday, but the scenery is worth seeing at least once.
If you are in Rainbow Canyon, on a dirt-capable motorcycle, the
Carp/ Elgin Road and Kane Springs Road are your only options unless
you want to backtrack to Highway 93.

With better offroad tires (i.e. TKC-80s) there are
a ton of side roads and trails that would be fun to explore on a GS,
not to mention an A-12 CIA plane wreckage to hunt down.
There are tons of cool places to camp, although shade
might be hard to come by.
If you go, take
plenty of water, extra food, tools, and be prepared to a hike a long
way if you breakdown or get stuck - in other words, it is a typical
Nevada county road.
