Carp/ Elgin Road Nevada - September 2007
Every September, I plan a ride down to Primm, Nevada
to help pit for my brother who races in the SCORE Primm 300 offroad
race. Since I've been doing this for over ten years now, it is
becoming a challenge to find new routes between Utah and Nevada.
This year, I repeated most of the route I took in
2004, with the exception of taking the Carp/ Elgin Road instead of
Kane Springs Canyon Road south of Caliente, Nevada. This tour log
only covers my ride on Carp/ Elgin Road, since nothing has really
changed in the past 350-million years along my 2004 route through
the Basin and Range country of Utah and Nevada.
Like all well planned rides, I ended up leaving
Salt Lake City about four hours later than I had planned. This
year I had all the usual gear, plus a set of golf clubs strapped to
the rear of my BMW R1150GS Adventure. The GS has got to be the
only bike that can still look awesome, regardless of what you strap
onto it. I had a large duffel bag |

that my golf bag and irons fit perfectly into, and
was almost exactly the width of my Jesse Luggage Odyssey saddle
bags. The only problem was that my woods would not fit fit in
the duffel bag, and were about 8-inches wider than my saddle bags.
I had two options, either leave my woods behind and
suffer the extra strokes on the golf course, or let my woods
overhang my saddle bags. I opted for the second option,
leaving my 3-wood behind and simply letting the grip of my driver
stick out of the duffel bag on the right-hand side of the bike.
Unbelievably, the huge bag on the back of my GS didn't even look out
of place, in fact the driver-grip sticking out of the bag resulted
in many smiles and expressions of amazement as I passed cars.
From Salt Lake, I headed south to Highway 6 & 50,
then west to Highway 93 south in Nevada. At Caliente, Nevada,
I left Highway 93 and entered Rainbow Canyon... and my adventure
began.
