2002 Four Corners Monument Tour

This is one of our older tours, thus the description is a little brief.  Please see the accompanying slideshow.

Although riders came from Colorado and Northern Utah, this tour officially commenced in Moab, Utah.  The tour left Moab north on Highway 128 (known  as The River Road).  At Interstate 70, the tour went east to Grand Junction, Colorado, then south on Highway 50 to Whitewater, Colorado.  From here the tour took Highway 141 through Unaweep Canyon to Telluride, Colorado.  Out of Telluride, the tour road over Lizard Head Pass and turned towards Durango, Colorado where we spent the night.

The next morning, the tour backtracked a little and then headed south to the Four Corners National Monument.  From the Four Corners, the tour rode across Arizona to Kayenta, where it then turned north through Monument Valley.  At Monticello, Utah, the tour took a scenic bypass through the Abajo Mountains before returning to Moab.

Tour Dates:  September 14th through 15th, 2002
Total Mileage: 718 Miles
Actual Riding Time: 9 Hours

Although we road very fast, this tour can be accomplished easily in two days.  The scenery is incredible, with the exception of a few barren areas in Arizona.  Potential camping along the tour is plentiful, although we opted for a hotel in Durango so that we could travel light.  September gave us perfect weather for this tour.  Any earlier and it would be way too hot and any later and you might have to contend with snow over Lizard Head Pass.  Riding is primarily on winding two lane paved roads through mountains, canyons and desert, with the exception of approximately 50 miles on Interstate 70.
